FDA Launches Animal Drug Manufacturing Pilot

Can AI Really Understand What Your Pet Is Saying?

For decades, scientists have studied how animals communicate through vocalizations, body language, facial expressions, and behavior. Today, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are enabling researchers to analyze these signals at a scale that was previously impossible, opening the door to technologies that could help humans better understand their companion animals.

At the core of this innovation is multimodal AI – a technology that combines different forms of data, including sound, video, movement, and contextual information, to identify patterns in animal behavior. Instead of interpreting a bark or meow in isolation, AI systems simultaneously analyze vocal pitch, frequency, posture, facial expressions, tail movement, and environmental cues to generate a more comprehensive understanding of what an animal may be communicating.

These models are trained on large datasets of annotated animal vocalizations and behavioral recordings, often collected with input from veterinarians, animal behaviorists, and researchers. By processing millions of audio samples alongside thousands of hours of video, machine learning algorithms learn to associate specific combinations of sounds and behaviors with emotions or behavioral states such as excitement, anxiety, hunger, playfulness, or discomfort.

One of the latest examples applying this technology is PettiChat, an AI-powered smart collar developed by Chinese startup Meng Xiaoyi. The wearable uses Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen large language model and is reportedly trained on more than 1.5 million pet audio samples and 3,200 hours of annotated pet video data. Rather than serving as a literal “translator,” the system analyzes vocalizations together with behavioral cues to generate natural-language interpretations through a companion mobile app. While the company has shared performance metrics for the device, independent scientific validation of these claims has not yet been published.

Although AI has made remarkable progress, animal communication remains an inherently complex field. An animal’s behavior is influenced by its environment, breed, age, personality, health, and previous experiences, making interpretation far more nuanced than translating one language into another. For now, AI-generated insights should be viewed as data-driven behavioral assessments rather than definitive translations.

As machine learning, bioacoustics, and wearable technologies continue to evolve, AI is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for understanding animal behavior. While we’re not yet at the stage of having conversations with our pets, these innovations represent an important step toward strengthening the bond between humans and animals through science and technology.

Elanco says new peer-reviewed data show Credelio Quattro kills ticks faster and more consistently than leading oral competitors, helping reduce the window for disease transmission

  • The lotilaner component killed black-legged ticks within 8 hours and reached its fastest initial kill against lone star ticks within 12 hours
  • Rapid activity was maintained from Day 0 through Day 28, with no statistically significant drop by the end of the monthly dosing interval
  • Elanco says the product outperformed Simparica Trio and NexGard Plus in speed of tick kill over the dosing period
  • The product already carries a US FDA-approved Lyme disease prevention claim tied to killing black-legged ticks

Faster and more sustained tick kill can matter because Lyme disease pathogens may transmit 24–48 hours after attachment, so eliminating ticks sooner may reduce infection risk.
