Nestlé Invests CHF 157M to Expand Purina Pet Food Production

Nestlé is investing more than CHF 157 million to expand its Purina pet food manufacturing site in Rayong, Thailand, increasing production capacity for pet food and treats across key brands including Felix, Friskies, Pro Plan, and Purina One.

Key Highlights

  • Investment supports capacity growth in a segment that now represents ~21% of Nestlé Group sales and is among its fastest-growing businesses.
  • Targets rising demand across Asia, Oceania, and Africa (AOA), where Purina estimates >350 million domestic cats and dogs and a shift toward packaged, premium nutrition.
  • Expanded production will use a high proportion of locally sourced raw materials (poultry, fish, vegetables), strengthening local supply chains and value creation in Thailand.
  • Part of a broader global manufacturing push, alongside CHF 520 million for a new plant/logistics platform in Italy and USD 550 million for a new Purina factory in Ohio, US.

Impact

The expansion positions Nestlé Purina to better meet accelerating demand for premium and specialized pet nutrition in fast-growing AOA markets while improving regional supply resilience. It also underscores continued industry confidence in long-term pet food growth driven by pet humanization and the shift from home-prepared to commercial diets.

Helping Cats Stay Protected Throughout Life

Vaccination is an important part of preventive care for cats, helping their immune systems prepare to fight infections that can cause serious illness. While a cat that spends most of its time indoors may appear to have little exposure to disease, infection risks can still exist through other animals, veterinary visits, contaminated environments, or contact with people and objects from outside.

For kittens, vaccination begins early because protection passed from the mother gradually declines. Core vaccines generally protect against feline panleukopenia virus, feline herpesvirus, and feline calicivirus. The initial series typically starts at around 6–8 weeks of age, with additional doses given at intervals until the kitten reaches around 16 weeks or older. This repeated vaccination helps overcome the interference that maternal antibodies can sometimes cause.

As cats grow, their vaccination needs become more individualized. Some vaccines are considered core because they protect against widespread and potentially serious diseases, while others are recommended according to factors such as age, lifestyle, environment, geographic location, and likelihood of exposure. Rabies vaccination, for example, may be essential where the disease is endemic or required by local regulations, while feline leukemia virus (FeLV) vaccination may be particularly relevant for cats with potential exposure to infected cats.

Vaccination does not necessarily mean giving every vaccine every year. Current guidelines emphasize assessing each cat’s individual risk and using appropriate booster intervals based on the vaccine, duration of protection, and exposure risk. Some core vaccines may be given at intervals of several years once the initial series has been completed.

The goal is therefore not simply to vaccinate more often, but to maintain meaningful protection throughout a cat’s life while avoiding unnecessary vaccination. Regular veterinary check-ups provide an opportunity to reassess those risks as a cat ages or its lifestyle changes, ensuring its vaccination plan remains appropriate.

Product Launch

Instinct Science has introduced Attending, an AI-powered clinical assistant designed specifically for veterinarians that combines generative AI with continuously updated, peer-reviewed veterinary references to deliver citation-backed clinical guidance.

Key Highlights

  • Provides specialty-level responses with inline citations drawn from resources including Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs, Standards of Care, and Clinician’s Brief; content is continuously updated by 200+ boarded specialists and pharmacists.
  • Safety-critical information (e.g., drug dosing) is retrieved directly from Plumb’s rather than generated by the AI model; all responses display supporting sources for verification.
  • Currently available via invitation-only research preview with hundreds of U.S. veterinarians, including a whole-hospital rollout at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in New York.
  • Planned for broader launch in the coming months as a standalone product and integrated into Instinct EMR and ScribbleVet workflows.

Impact

Attending represents a move toward evidence-grounded, source-transparent AI in veterinary practice, potentially accelerating access to trusted guidance for complex or time-sensitive cases. By embedding established reference content and specialist oversight, it aims to complement—not replace—clinical judgment while streamlining information retrieval at the point of care.

Product Launch

Cosmos Health has received its first orders for C-ScrubVet, a veterinary antimicrobial cleanser, marking its commercial entry into animal health and extending the C-Scrub franchise beyond human healthcare. The product is now on sale in the UK, initially via e-commerce, with broader European expansion planned from Q4 2026.

Key Highlights

  • C-ScrubVet Wash 4% CHDG contains 4% chlorhexidine digluconate for external use in dogs, cats, horses, and other companion/large animals; supplied in a 500 mL pump bottle.
  • Certified under EN 1656 and EN 1657 for bactericidal and fungicidal activity in veterinary applications; also active against enveloped viruses.
  • Leverages Cosmos’ existing C-Scrub formulation and in-house EU GMP/EMA-certified manufacturing at Cana Laboratories (Athens), plus established quality and distribution infrastructure.
  • Phased go-to-market: UK e-commerce first, followed by expansion into additional European markets and distribution through pet-store chains, veterinary practices, and clinics.

Impact

C-ScrubVet provides Cosmos Health with a low-capital entry into the veterinary antimicrobial segment by extending a proven human-health platform into animal care. Success will hinge on translating existing manufacturing and commercial capabilities into sustained adoption across UK and European pet-care and veterinary channels.

Product Launch

Jaguar Health has expanded its Neonorm franchise into companion animals with the launch of Neonorm Dog, a non-prescription, plant-based product designed to support normal stool consistency and gastrointestinal (GI) fluid balance in dogs

Key Highlights

  • Builds on the existing Neonorm Foal and Neonorm Calf platform; uses a standardized botanical extract from sustainably harvested Croton lechleri tree.
  • Botanical ingredient acts locally in the GI tract to support stool consistency and GI fluid balance, targeting common episodes of loose stools in dogs.
  • Positioned as a non-antibiotic, plant-based, at-home option for uncomplicated digestive support; persistent or severe GI signs still require veterinary assessment.
  • Expands Jaguar’s addressable market beyond production animals into the large companion-animal segment via consumer retail channels.

Impact

Neonorm Dog gives Jaguar Health a foothold in the companion-animal GI support category while leveraging an established botanical platform. Its non-prescription, retail-first strategy targets pet owners seeking convenient, plant-based options for routine digestive management, potentially broadening the franchise across both production and companion animals.

Product Showcase

PetSuper made its IFA debut in 2026, presenting a connected portfolio of smart pet-care devices and its vision for an AI-powered ecosystem that integrates everyday care data, IoT connectivity, and intelligent insights.

Key Highlights

  • Demonstrated PetSuperAi alongside LitterGo, ViGo, DryGo, FeedView, and HydriGo, covering litter maintenance, grooming, feeding, hydration, and behavioral observation.
  • PetSuperAi aims to aggregate data across feeding, hydration, grooming, litter, and routines to identify patterns and support day-to-day care decisions.
  • IFA engagements with European retailers, distributors, and tech partners focused on automated litter care, consistent feeding, flexible hydration, and AI-assisted routine monitoring.
  • Post-IFA, PetSuper plans to pursue retail, distribution, and channel partnerships across Europe and other priority markets, combining connected hardware with an expanding software/AI layer.

Impact

PetSuper’s ecosystem reflects the broader shift in pet tech from single-purpose automation to integrated, data-driven care platforms. While positioned as a pet-care and wellness technology (not a veterinary diagnostic system), its long-term value will depend on translating connected data into reliable, actionable insights for owners and potential collaboration with veterinary care.
